The results are in. Find out how asset owners from all around the world use smart beta products and think about their role within portfolios.

FTSE Russell is proud to release the results of the Smart beta: 2017 global survey findings from asset owners, our fourth annual smart beta survey. Designed to track the progression of how smart beta index products are perceived, evaluated, and adopted, this survey builds on results from previous surveys to further reveal asset owners’ primary objectives and growing interest in smart beta index products. New this year, we’ve also included an analysis of smart beta evaluation and usage trends for ESG and fixed income, which is intended to grow and evolve with this nascent market.

Get meaningful insights into emerging global and regional trends related to adoption rates, single, multi-factor, ESG and fixed income index-based strategies, and much more:

The evaluation of smart beta indexes has reached a new high. The trend of asset owners reporting an existing smart beta allocation has climbed to 46%, up from 36% last year.

The popularity of multi-factor combination index-based strategies continues. Multi-factor strategies have become the top smart beta equity strategy used and evaluated, while Value and Low Volatility are the most widely adopted and considered single factor index-based strategies.

Over 41% of asset owners evaluating strategies based on smart beta indexes anticipate applying environmental, social & governance (ESG) considerations. Primary motivations for using a smart sustainability index-based strategy are investment-led rather than regulatory or social.
